Cornhole in Shekou dates back to 2007
The timeline begins, as Brian Morefield, SCF Original, describes... "If memory serves, the first two boards were produced in 2007, Ryan commissioned Ah Chan to build them. This was mostly done to relieve boredom during long periods of beer brewing at Ryan's house when Tim, James, Ryan and I had to wait for something to boil." |
Soon there after...well three years...
the board count grew to 4 strong in 2010. James, the last remaining SCF Original, still in Shekou would promote the game by having people come out to Cheers, have some beers, and toss some bags. Friends gathered, laughter was loud and Carlsbergs were enjoyed. Just as the boys who created Basketball meant it to be, Cornhole in Shekou was only a recreational game. |
The Day finally came and the FIRST Cornhole Tournament arrives...
With more players coming out to Cheers and the game growing in popularity the idea of a tournament was brought up after a late round of bags. It was a small tournament with about 16 teams and held on a Friday afternoon after school.
The inaugural tournament crowned a team named Bambi Betts on Us the winner, taking home a cash prize as well as a sweet wrestling belt. The event was such a success, there was no way SCF couldn't think to not having another tournament. For the following spring and there after there would be a Cornhole Tournament.

It's been 7 years after the pioneers brought cornhole to Shekou. The game has grown huge in popularity and tournaments are being taken seriously. The 2014 Srping Fling tournament goes international, as one of the 32 teams entered is coming from Hong Kong. All of this started in 2007 after some guys wanted to pass the time while their homebrew simmered.
Also, for any of you who may know who other champions are, it would be great to get a complete record. Drop us a line and let us know so we can update our statistics, a picture would be boss. Cheers
