The SCF has come back with a vengeance!

The Fall Mix-Up is here and player registration is open!

Use the Registration box below to get signed up before there are no more spots left! The Fall Mix-Up is ran a little different than our Spring Tournament. Just so you know what is in store, here is the breakdown of what happens here.

Players MUST Register before the Tournament!

Our goal is an EVEN amount of guys and gals. A couple of days before the tournament TEAM ARE CHOSEN! Each team will be made up of one guy and one gal. Unlike the Spring Tournaments, where costumes are celebrated and awards are given out, you do not need to have a costume, but it does make it more fun. 24 hours before the tournament kicks off your team needs to think of a name and get it to SCF. If you don't, your team name's fate will be left to the SCF.

Tournament Details

Where: Willy's Crab Shack
When: Noon, Sunday, November 2nd
Why: Sundays are generally FUNdays!

The First of Many @Volfoni

18/5/2014

PictureVolfoni Restaurant - Coastal Rose Garden 1
It started off as a rainy Saturday in Shekou, but soon enough the sun came out as well as the boards!

First and foremost, the SCF would like to thank Volfoni for being a great host! The Speakeasy and their staff made sure all the guests had cold drinks to stave off the heat of the day and some good food to keep our energy high for the intense matches that were to follow.

With 16 competitors showing up to play, the SCF decided to have an open tournament format that allowed players to challenge any teams they wanted, partner up with any player they wanted and play as many games as they could tolerate.

Four hours of intense competition ensued. From noon to four, we saw some CRAZY games, EPIC rounds and near IMPOSSIBLE throws.

SCF has to give a shout out to our top throwers of the day! Pretty soon there will be a ranking system that will let you know just who the top throwers are in Shekou, but remember, you'll only get ranked if you come out to the events, so make sure you join our WeChat group or on Facebook so you know when the SCF events are happening!

  1. Wes (32 points)
  2. Mark (28 Points)
  3. Carlos (26 points)
  4. Andrea (20 points)

If we video taped the day, there would have been FOUR highlights that would have blown your Cornhole mind! Let me break it down for you.

  • 4 - Rachael, partnered with Andrea were tossing like champs as they came to the final rounds of a very lopsided game. Rachael stepped to the line during the final round and dropped not one, not two but THREE holes without the bag even touching the sides! When she's on, she's on!
  • 3 - In a tight situation, the pressure was on. Andrea and Mark found themselves down late in the game to a potent Wes and Marty. Needing something BIG to happen Andrea sunk 3 holes and single handedly secured the win. What a triumph over the pressure!
  • 2 - As if the first two were hard enough to believe, you may need to get on the edge of your seat for this one. Early on in the day a late comer strolled in looking for a partner and ready to play. Wes not only won the overall point total and top prize, but almost got the number one highlight by dropping FOUR BAGS in one round! This man knows how to find the hole!
  • 1 - The highlight that takes the cake comes from a virtual unknown in the Cornhole world. Hailing from all the way down under Marcus was excited to get some more games under his belt after getting a taste of it on May 3rd at the Srping Fling Tournament. Using a technique that is a bit eccentric Marcus started getting a hang of the game and then when you didn't think it could happen, it did. Marcus and Lee looking for a win, found themselves on the short side of the score, but then it happened. With a fortress of bags, including his own, surrounding the hole Marcus let the final bag out of his hand, and it dropped ever so sweetly into hole taking along with it his other two bags! He may be an old timer, but he is no longer a first timer! Nice job Marcus!

That's right! Join us from noon onwards for a cornhole tournament. We don't know yet how the tournament will be run, but rest assured Mark and Carlos know PE and tournaments, so they will work out the details.

Lee, from Volfoni, knows how to host and will have some drink specials including buy 1 beer get 1 free, cocktail pitchers and some shots to the winners of the tourney. He is also a responsible adult and will put some snacks to munch on!

Blue skies, perfect temperatures and a slight breeze to keep the air moving-- the SCF couldn't have asked for a better day to have a Cornhole tournament!

32 teams came from around the world, ending up at Captain's Bar for six hours that will go down in Shekou history as the event of 2014. Well, that is until the fall tournament comes around. But at least for right now, wow!

I feel like I am getting ahead of myself here, so I am going to back up just a bit to make sure I don't miss anything. Let me break the day down for you!

Double Elimination Tournament Results

Pool A

This pool was filled with a lot of great potential and a couple of unknowns from Hong Kong. If you check out the final standings, there was really no competition for the number one seed. The Hong Korn Kidz ran away by only have eight points scored against them!

The really fun games were were between the teams that were ranked 2-5. Coming into the competition the Wife Beaters (2) were planning on smacking their way into the finals, but it seemed that switching out their "trailer trash" outfits from last year for "middle class" clothes got to their heads and they could only muster up a 5th place middle class finish.

The practically unknown Natural Corn Killers (5) not only scared some people with their costumes and questionable accessories, but their game play got them to finish 4th in a VERY competitive pool loosing to the number one seed of the tournament, La Maiz On (1) and the 3rd place finisher The Sphinx's Batts.

Speaking of the Sphinx's Batts, who knew! After the ranking professionals at SCF headquarters projected them at 4th in this Pool, they came out with something to prove. Tossing their way into the Winners Final Game, they played the first and second place teams back to back and were tossed to the base of the Great Pyramid only miss their opportunity to go out on top.

With a lot of expectations from the SCF community, La Maiz On came into the day early and often. They were picked to win it all, but needed to prove themselves from the beginning. There was no messing around in Pool A. After being taken out by The Sphinx's Batts in the second round, they had a long road back to try and get to the finals, but with adversity comes opportunity and did they ever. Three games later they found themselves finishing 2nd to Hong Korn Kidz in the Pool A Finals.

Pool B

Not to piggy back to much from Pool A, but this pool was filled with a lot of great potential and a couple of unknowns from Shekou. Unlike Pool A, though, competition was at it's highest. Any given Saturday in the back yard or at your local bar any one of these teams could have won, but there would only be two that could advance, so let me give you the story of how we got there.

To start off, the second match of the day was almost a forfeit for Papa Corn, but the talent recruiter of the SCF noticed a couple of men, let's call them Supermen, in the crowd that had some potential. The intrigue and fascination with this wonderful sport from the moment they were offered the opportunity was not just for show, they were there to play, and play they did. For their first game, the Supermen took Papa Corn (3) into the later minutes of a tough match but ended up loosing at the end. With all of their effort they did manage to scratch out a 4th place finish. Not a bad start for these two newbies.

Making their way to the Winner's Final, Papa Corn got put on "time out" for poor play by the more experienced Papa's of the Pool, Wild Wes. After that, Breaking Bags got their revenge on Papa Corn by knocking them out of the tournament by some questionable methods in their second meeting, but Papa Corn left with a respectable 3rd place finish.

As stated earlier, it was brought to the attention of the SCF Tournament Directors that a substance said to have been "candy" was given to many of the Breaking Bag's opponents. That substance may, or may not have had any affect on their opponents play, but it has initiated a debate that will most likely result in a by-law being made for next tournaments to make sure this "situation" doesn't happen again.

The final games of Pool B were exciting to watch and ended with Breaking Bags challenging Wild Wes to a showdown. Wild Wes was a little slow on the draw, loosing the first game, but during the second game they stopped shooting blanks and ended Breaking Bags hope for 1st place.

Pool C

If this pool was an ice cream flavor it would be vanilla. Deliciously satisfying with no extra toppings to complicate the simplicity something good. For the first three rounds the winner's bracket, those teams that were supposed to win, won. 1 over 4, 2 over 3, 1 over 2.

The elimination round is where things got exciting. 7 takes out 6, 8 takes out 5! It was no holds bar pandemonium. But as the Elimination Round started coming to an end, there were a couple of teams that stood out from the rest. Same Same and Mar Squared continued to challenge each other and the teams they played against, averaging over 20 minutes a game! Finally, Mar Squared ended Same Same's chance to get to the finals after a 23 minute 15-11 final match between the two. Same Same ended with a clean 4th place finish.

CRON got themselves to the Elimination bracket by loosing to Korn Fu Hustle, and ended up having to face off against the now infamous Mar Squared. With Mar Squared leading CRON 13-12 going into the final toss, CRON holed a couple of bags and escaped the match with an elevated heart rate and chance to take on Korn Fu Hustle one more time. The final match was back and forth, but ended in Korn Fu Hustles favor for the second time today.

Pool D

When it comes to character and charm, Pool D exemplifies only the former. This Pool was as charismatic as they get. It may be because their boards were closest to the crowds, but any eight team pool with pregnant women, guys wearing winter hats on a 80 degree day and not only one, but two games lasting over 27 minutes, these were entertaining matches to watch.

After a pretty vanilla first couple of rounds, the fun started happening when the Jarr Heads came to the battle field with some ammunition. Good Game had the odds going into their final match with a previous championship team member, but the Jarr Heads blitzkrieg of tosses sent them home saying "good game," only mustering up a 4th place finish.

Heading into their next match against the heavily favored fourM team, the Jarr Heads went blow for blow against the the Giant Minions only to come up two points short of eliminating the Minions and sending them back to Gru's Hideout! Overall, a great showing from the Jarr Heads who will be returning next year to better their 3rd place finish.

Putin Da Hole had a pretty solid showing, winning all the way through the Winners Final, only to take on the fourM again after giving them their first loss. Needless to say, fourM came back like they just drank the PX-41 serum turning them into the BA Purple Bag Throwing Evil Minions who were on a mission to reconcile their previous loss. Two close games later and fourM left Putin Da Hole with a 2nd place finish on their way to 1st place in Pool D.

Welcome to the FINALS!

It was one heck of a tournament and the Finals proved to be an EPIC finish to a sporting day. Just wanted to inform you about how the teams earned the right to be in the Final 8 of the 2014 Srping Fling Cornhole Tournament.

There were 4 Groups made up of 8 teams.

Each Group went through a treacherous Double Elimination Tournament that gave us a clear Number 1 and Number 2 out of the Group.

From there, the following was used to determine the Final 8 ranked teams.
Ranking the First 4

Number 1's from each Pool will be given a 1-4 ranking. Rankings are tallied by least points given up. If there is a tie, a best of three rock, paper, scissors game will commence to determine higher seed.
Ranking the Last 4

Number 2's from each Pool will be given a 5-8 ranking. Rankings are tallied by least points given up. If there is a tie, a best of three rock, paper, scissors game will commence to determine higher seed.
The Final 8

Hong Korn Kidz
Korn Fu Hustle
Wild Wes
fourM
Breaking Bags
Putin Da Hole
CRON
La Maiz On
So here is what it all comes down to, a win or go home scenario. The past 4 hours of games, trials and tribulations mean NOTHING and it's all about the NOW. Teams were ranked and the fate now transcended to their own destiny. What was about to happen is only what was meant to happen. The Finals of the Shekou Cornhole Federation Srping Fling Tournament were upon us. There is no algorithm that can figure out who would be in the finals, no scientific probability would dictate the results, this was the finals, human versus human and these were the results.
Quarter Finals

Hong Korn Kidz def. La Maiz On

Korn Fu Hustle def. CRON

Putin Da Hole def. Wild Wes

fourM def. Breaking Bags

Semi-Finals

As thought was going to happen the Number fourM couldn't hold on against the number one seed Hong Korn Kidz. The Kidz were just to much to handle, and it wasn't look pretty for anyone else who was going to face them.

Putin Da Hole, the number one from Pool D drew Korn Fu Hustle, the number one from Pool C.

The battle commenced and all heck broke loose,
when Putin Da Hole strung Korn Fu in a noose.

The game was long,
and both teams played strong.

Putin found victory and left Korn Fu in history.

The Finals

Putin Da Hole, the only remaining team from Shekou, against the Hong Korn Kidz, the visiting team from across the PR-Diz. The crowd was silent as they watch these two titans tossed. A hole from one team rebuttled by the other. It was a marathon. Slowly the Kidz widened the gap after both teams hit double digits and Putin Da Hole could hold on to game any longer.

To give them credit the Kidz showed up to play,
there was no other team that challenged them that day.

So...here's the deal

Each link above will take you to a separate bracket that will show you the double elimination tournament format for each pool. Throughout the Pool Round and Final Round, here are a couple of rules about the play as well as for teams to advance to the Final Round. There will be clear Cornhole Rules at each board if you have any questions. Tournament Leaders, Carlos and Mark, will make a ruling decision unless their team is involved, then it will be give to the other Leader. If both Carlos and Mark are in an argument, it will be ruled by the nonpartisan foreigner from Hong Kong, Brandon Little.

Pool Round:
  1. Games will be played first to 15.
  2. You may go over 15 points.
  3. By the end of the Pool Round, there will be a clear 1 and 2 seed.
  4. These teams will be ranked as follows:
  • Number 1's from each Pool will be given a 1-4 ranking. Rankings are tallied by least points given up. If there is a tie, a best of three rock, paper, scissors game will commence to determine higher seed.
  • Number 2's from each Pool will be given a 5-8 ranking. Rankings are tallied by least points given up. If there is a tie, a best of three rock, paper, scissors game will commence to determine higher seed.
Final Round:
  1. Games will be played first to 21.
  2. The Finals will be a Single Elimination, win or go drink some more, style.

Four Teams...That's Enough to Play

PictureMick and Meaghan, Winners April 19, 2014
Thanks to all of those that stopped by to throw some bags around this past Saturday, it was great fun to share some drinks and laughs on a beautiful spring day. With the winner goes the spoils, so to Mick and Meaghan who went almost perfect the entire tournament, you are subject to a free starter at Willy's. Show this blog spot to Willy's with proper ID (See Photo) and you can collect your starter.

With that all being said, after holding our first ever impromptu tournament at Willy's Crab Shack we found a couple of things out that are going to be important for you all to know about come Srping Fling Tournament Time on May 3rd.

  1. I got the best draw when it comes to partners, Rachael was knocking teams around with her finesse and finish. I think it's safe to say she will be carrying the team. Who ever is going to be throwing against her on will rue the day they came across CRON.
  2. Mick Huiet is no joke when it comes to getting it in the hole! Round after round he continued to support his team, by sinking bag after bag. As long as his partner Fred shows up and he doesn't have to forfeit, Team La Maiz On will be a force to reckon with.
  3. I was glad to draw at least one Lill to be my partner on Saturday, but I am not looking forward to taking on either one in two weeks. The new comers to the Federation have some talent and are going to come out swinging when their pool play begins. Look out for the Natural Corn Killers.
  4. We can't forget about two others who came to dial in their bag skills. Hillary and Andrea were putting in the rounds and put their best foot forward. Technically speaking that is what you are supposed to do to increase accuracy, as they did. Careful against these two ladies, they'll take you the distance if they have to.
  5. Lastly, SCF is trying to legitimize the Cornhole competitions by streamlining bags, boards and laws of the game. The trial run of our new bags was needed and with a couple of broken bags with some questionable insides, our biggest question from the day begs for an answer, "Is there a difference in action between lentils and corn kernels?"

With that all being said, thanks again to all of those who came out and the federation will bring a couple of boards and bags to La Maison on Friday for the SIS DHC Monthly Mingle. This will be the last weekend to get some practice in before the big tournament!

Get in the Hole!

The First of Many...Impromptu Cornhole Tournament

18/4/2014

Picture
Good morning Cornholers!

It's a beautiful weekend and only we are only weeks away from the biggest Cornhole tournament in China's history. We thought it would be a great opportunity for anyone and everyone to get a practice round of cornhole in!

Marshall has happily agreed to hosting this impromptu tournament at Willy's Crab Shack! There will be a drink special, buy 1 get 1 on all Alcoholic drinks including G&Ts for McIlroy, and anything else your pallet is craving on a hot spring day. The specials will last from 1300 to 1900 and you are invited to stay for as many as you'd like.

The tournament will start at 1300 on SATURDAY, May 19th just like the drink special! Teams will be decided on arrival, but we need to get a head count so please email me so I can start a list of players! Also, Willy's needs to know how many staff to have on hand! I would appreciate an email by 1200, but if you can't and still want to come by, don't let that deter you from a great afternoon at the boards!

My assumption is that the event will be short and sweet. I am not expecting the event to go past 1500, but who knows how many people will be out! The tournament will be ran by me and the tournament style is TBD depending on entrants! I am currently thinking of a Round Robin!

This should be a great way to pass the weekend and have a great time with friends! Don't forget to reply to me ASAP with your RSVP!

Oh, and Willy's will also give any starter to the victor of the competition!

Let the games begin and see you at Willy's!

Wondering why Srping is misspelled...

8/4/2014

“What. This is unbelievable… #*%&ing China.”

As we opened the box of t-shirts and looked at the design that Ben had worked so hard on, we all stared at it, speechless.  Yes, it was beautiful, looking just like the silhouette of James Anderson, the godfather of Shekou Cornhole.  Yes, it was exactly what was intended, a way to honor the man who had brought us the game.  But that’s not why we all stared at it with our jaws dropped, eyes widened.  Smack in the middle of the shirt that should've had “2011 SPRING CORNHOLE”, these letters appeared instead: “2011 SRPING CORNHOLE”.

Naturally (and sadly), the initial response from the core group was, “#*%&ing China.”  Of course that had a lot more to do with the fact that we loved Ben than it did with our frequent experiences of mishaps in China indeed, I’d like to believe.  At this point, I got suspicious and leaned into my husband's ear to ask the question: “Babe, are you sure you didn’t misspell it on the original design that you’d sent in?”

Anyone who knows Ben knows this about him:

Ben sad: 😐

Ben happy: 😐

Ben shocked: 😐

Ben confused: 😐

Ben angry: 😐

Ben thinking, “Oh shit…”: 😐

Needless to say, his express turned to 😐 and he decided to check his original design.  It turns out that he was so busy with the designing of “James”, he missed transposing the two letters in “Spring”.

No fear, however, as Brandon Little came to the rescue: “It all works.  The Cornhole tournament falls on Cinco de Mayo, so this is perfect: Sr. Ping = Señor Ping! Perfect.”

The rest is history.  Legen… wait for it… dary!

That’s it: that’s the story of Sr. Ping Spring Fling Cornhole Tournament!

Thank You Liz Cho-Young for the explanation!

Friends, Shekouians, Worldpersons, lend me your ears!

Howdy Y'all!

This is going to be the happening page that will give you updates about what is going down in Shekou Town when it comes to cornhole. Right now the biggest event know to MAN and WOMAN (we're not sexist) will commence on May 3rd at the one and only Captain's Bar.

We will be having a little May madness of our own with 64 contestants, 32 teams and all you can eat food and drink! The team limit has been met and now we are just waiting for the organizers to start a forum where people can start the trash talking! Your requests, answered, THIS IS the spot!

With more information to come about the tournament and many others, I'll let you all start with the banter. If you'd like to join our email list to find out about other Cornhole happenings around please visit the Tournaments portion of this site!
